One problem with dictionaries is that they are often difficult to read and understand. Dictionary definitions frequently contain words whose meanings are challenging. So, a learner’s original problem is sometimes compounded by seeking help in the dictionary. I’m writing here about a helpful online alternative from the Wikimedia Foundation, the family of user-created resources that has given us Wiktionary, Wikipdia, Simple English Wikipedia, and more.
Simple English Wiktionary describes itself as “…an online dictionary that uses simpler words so it is easier to understand.” The result is a refreshingly accessible reference work. While it may be especially helpful for English language learners and individuals with other learning challenges, I believe this is a resource that can be valuable for all learners.
For example, here’s an image of Simple English Wiktionary’s definition of the word ‘dictionary’. Notice that terms used in the definition are hyperlinked to their own definitions, and the terms etymology and pronunciation are both linked and explained. The entry also contains audio files for the British and American pronunciation of the word, as well as illustrations.
Simple English Wiktionary currently contains entries for 17,542 terms. For anyone wishing to contribute, there are helpful instructions. There is even an opportunity to request a definition.
