Any learner who goes online to investigate something comes across words that need to be explained. I have tried multiple dictionary extensions for Google’s Chrome browser. These provide quick definitions for words used on a web pages, without having to leave the page. Here’s a Chrome dictionary extension that I think offers several positives–as much for 12 year old students as for 60 year old learners like me.
Google Dictionary is easy to use, definitions are generally concise, and those definitions can be read aloud with the Chrome browser’s Speakit text-to-speech extension. Clicking on an audio icon in each definition, demonstrates what the word sounds like when spoken.
After the extension is downloaded from the Chrome Web Store and installed, when any word is double-clicked a definition appears, as shown here.
If a word is selected, and then you click on the icon for the Google Dictionary on the Addon Bar, a more complete definition for the word is opened. This is illustrated below. Unfortunately, text-to-speech via Speakit is not available in the extended definitions.
