Have you ever found an image and wondered where it came from? Perhaps you’ve wanted to know if it’s ok to use the picture on your own site or in some other project. Or maybe you’d like to know where in the world that majestic mountain massif is. Now Google is offering remarkable help with this kind of query.
Google Search by Image is a truly remarkable search tool! Instead of entering a word, you can now enter an image as your “search term”. You can drag and drop an image into the search box, upload an image from your computer, or enter the URL of an image.
Browser extensions are also available for both Firefox and Chrome. With the browser extension, all you have to do is right-click on an image or hover the cursor over it to be given the option to search with the picture.
My initial tests suggest that searching by image in Google can be effective. For example, using the Google Chrome extension, Google had no difficulty determining accurately that the image in the header of this blog is from the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island!
Here is Google’s video introducing this amazing new way of searching the web.
