Assistive Media (online resource) In its own words, Assistive Media is a website that, “…provides audio access to reading materials to anyone with a reading access barrier.” Magazine articles, essays and other short works of both fiction and non-fiction are recorded as read by volunteers. The audio files are then made available for download or via Assistive Media’s podcast service.
Files in the audio archives are listed by topic, by publication, and by date. There is also a separate listing of “recently posted” files. The list of publications that Assistive Media draws from is both eclectic and extensive. Most, if not all, of the selections are intended for an adult or post-secondary audience.
I downloaded and listened to several samples. All were read by skilled readers, and the audio quality of the recordings was excellent. As you would expect, the folks at Assistive Media have worked hard to create an accessible website. Altogether, Assistive Media is a very high quality free resource.
